Works of art have even more meaning than they had when first created through the interpretations offered them by generations of critics and artists. Fresh new sources have been given the ability to offer their insight and abilities into art, creating entire new genres of art, music, theatre, and the like. It has allowed for a truer search for knowledge than was ever possible before. And ultimately, the search to find the true meaning of art and of the ideas of the artists forms a true sense of religiosity, which gives passion and meaning to the lives of groups stretching far beyond the cultural elite. The ways the image and texts are interpreted are based on interpreter's perception, belief, past history and interpretation of events.
In John Berger's book, ‘Ways of Seeing,' the writer explores the way we view and interpret the art. The message provided by the writer relates to interpretation of the message. In the book both in text and image there is a message about the relationship of men and women and presence of their power and position. Berger starts his essay with: "It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it" Berger, 7.
In the very beginning of his essay, Berger implies to his readers that it is actually seeing which develops our thoughts and meanings. Using these thoughts and meanings, we interpret our surrounding with words. This very clearly underlines that we describe what we see and what we make of what we…. What does it mean? John Berger has shown how to take any image, whether it is a painting, an advertisement, or a picture, and dissect it into a branching, almost fractal, network of deeper meanings. He has done this by changing observational techniques of looking at the image; by focusing in on specific areas within the image to reveal scenes within the overall scene or by controlling the arrangement in which we view the image e. left to right, right to left, etc. By pairing an image with music, or the context of which it is being shown, a different meaning altogether is presented, as opposed to viewing the image in silence, or out of context.
Each of these methods of viewing enhances and conceals differentiations in what is trying to be conveyed. The experience is almost circumstantial and thus, utterly subjective to a degree. An artist is so concerned with creating a piece that is so specific to their era that they cannot create what they want. What also happens is that people who have no skill or artistic ability infiltrate the art world and put a two in square on a three foot canvas and call it art. Just like politics we as humans have created these unnecessary and mythical forces of nature that in fact do not exist in reality but in our minds. What has happened is that we are being taken advantage of by people who know that these forces of nature are unnecessary and uncalled for. He does not want society to understand his personal insecurities through his art. Similarly, Oscar Wilde puts too much of himself in his art and has to defend himself to society. Though Wilde attempts to appear unaffected on the surface, he truly cares about others opinions of him.
He preaches aestheticism and attempts to claim that an artist can not be understood through their work. Due to his honest statement, one would be inclined to see him in a better light then previously before. The art world is not known for giving much money to those in it. A flame of love is shared, however, because the individual burns it with other individuals in our group of writers. The idea of loving others but hating ourselves is a paradoxical idea, until we take a human train into account: juxtaposition. We constantly compare our own standing to others, and strive to be better because of that.
